    Frequently Asked Questions

    What is self-employment tax?
It is Social Security and Medicare tax for people who work for themselves: 15.3% of 92.35% of your net profit. Employees split this with their employer; freelancers pay both halves. You get to deduct half of it from your income.
When are quarterly estimated taxes due?
For the 2026 tax year: April 15, June 15 and September 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027. Pay online at IRS Direct Pay or through your IRS online account.
    What is the QBI deduction?
The Qualified Business Income deduction lets many self-employed people deduct up to 20% of their business profit. This estimator applies it in full, which is right for most freelancers below the income limits. High earners in certain service fields may get less.
Is this accurate for my situation?
It is an estimate for someone whose only income is freelance work. If you also have a salaried job, credits (like the child tax credit), or live in a state with special rules, your real bill will differ. A tax professional or tax software will give the exact figure.
