Frequently Asked Questions
What is FIRE?
FIRE stands for Financial Independence, Retire Early. The goal is to invest enough that your portfolio can cover your living costs indefinitely, so working becomes optional.
What is the 4% rule?
Research on historical US market returns (the Trinity Study) found that withdrawing 4% of a portfolio in the first year, then adjusting for inflation, lasted at least 30 years in most periods. Many early retirees use 3.25%–3.5% to be safer over 40+ years.
Why use a return after inflation?
It keeps all the numbers in today's money. Your FIRE number and spending stay in today's dollars, so you do not have to guess future prices. 5% after inflation is a common long-term assumption for a stock-heavy portfolio.
